You Made it To Page 1 (Page One) of Google – So What?

SERP Success = Instant Internet Riches? Not.

10.21.2011 – (Santa Cruz, CA) BrandWranglers.Com, creators of branded Internet marketing campaigns, announced today that search engine rank position (SERP) is not the home run. It might only be a base hit when it comes to Google marketing and SEO.

So congrats. You got one of your pages to page 1 (page one) of Google, Yahoo or Bing, or even P1 for a particular keyword. But where are the orders, phone calls, consult requests? Sure it’s a thrill to see your Internet marketing SEO dollars pay off with a high-ranked page, but think about it: what have you really got?

What Does That SERP Ranking Mean?

Rankings fluctuate due to searcher context and by the minute. Clear your cookies and sign out of all Google apps (Gmail, Analytics, AdWords etc.) so you’re not seeing a tailored view. What platform are you searching on? Search results can be geotargeted, so an iPad or smartphone might boost rank for pages of nearby businesses in ways a desktop or lappy will not.

But hey, if an SE personalizes, two people might see different rankings anyway, making page 1 (or page one) rank less meaningful. And, if you are getting rank for an irrelevant or very long tail keyword, you’ll see little useful traffic from it.

This leads to the quality of your SEO copywriting. Your page’s title, description, and URL all appear in search results. Are they catchy, relevant, inviting, or do they turn people away? When people click do they bounce or stay?

There is even more craziness which should get you off the page 1 (or (page one) rank fixation. Google claims that about 25% of searches every month use new search terms, previously unseen terms and phrases. How can you pre-target those in SEO Internet marketing? Here’s a key fact: searchers who type in long tail keywords may be at the end of their shopping cycle and ready to spend. If you have your call to action ready, a human-readable message and a clear user workflow in your shopping cart, it matters little if the keyword only gets 28 hits if all are buyers.

What would make better sense for Google SEO marketing?

Conversions and sales are the most meaningful obviously. But that is where competitive market analysis breaks down – you can see a competitor’s page rank but you have absolutely no idea what their business results are. So ranking reports bragging on the position improvements might get you a monthly check. But the A/B test that counts is sales this month vs. sales last month.

So for Internet marketing and Google marketing SEO we have just alluded to a cluster of necessary Google page 1 (Google page one) skills: user experience design, SEO copywriting, creative Internet marketing, on-page SEO, shopping cart development, website layout and more, all of which have to be brought to bear to maximize actual purchase traffic. SEO Gap Analysis Shows Keyword Land Rush is Underway

Yes the title is over-amped but getting your business’s keywords staked out online is time-critical. SEO gap analysis shows that the keyword space (translation, available Internet real estate) is rapidly being claimed. This also means that the best ranking positions in search, meaning the first page of results, are being secured and held.

An extensive SEOMoz article SEOMOZ Beginners Guide to SEO illustrates that the first ten search results received 89.71% of all click-through traffic, with 42.25% of traffic flowing to the first ranking position. SEO gap analysis is a multi-stage activity consulting Google and Yahoo! to find your site’s comparitive strength of keywords and inbound links.

This means there is a literal Internet Keyword Land Rush underway. Sites which are ranked on the first page of search results will maintain those positions, so long as they continue proper keyword SEO. Translation: that keyword has been gobbled up, that claim has been staked.

While you are thinking about it, click for a Free Consultation from Brandwranglers on this and related topics. We’d love to hear your plans for your brand!

So What To Do?

If your site wants a top ranking, then the strategy is twofold:

1. Prepare to pursue SEO goals for the life of your company or client
2. Start practicing good SEO today

More from SEOMOZ:

  • Search is very, very popular. It reaches nearly every online American, and billions of people around the world.
  • Being listed in the first few results is critical to visibility.
  • Being listed at the top of the results not only provides the greatest amount of traffic, but instills trust in consumers as to the worthiness and relative importance of the company/website.
  • An incredible amount of offline economic activity is driven by searches on the web

Build your pages for humans first

Use reasoned arguments based on the truth. Write your web copy using drama, interest, excitement, mystery and facts facts facts. Then, using your keyword analysis, carefully edit your copy to place keywords in the heads, bolded text, and body copy. Build the keywords into the page tags and various HTML attributes.

Lather Rinse Repeat!

The Internet Land Rush is On

Thinking of Flash for Your New Website?

Woman Shopping at Home

If your web designer suggests a pure Flash website or even a Flash homepage, think carefully. Flash is visual fun for designers, and Flash pages can look impressive.

I used to love to do Flash work, and got a kick out of it. Then I discovered… while Google can index Flash content to a degree, most Flash sites are invisible in search engine rankings.

There are other ways to get cool looking content, such as HTML5 and various WordPress plugins.
